Publication Date: The volume is devoted to the topic of the regions of Idumea and Edom in the Persian period.

For quite a while now, research on Edom has been influenced by Nelson Glueck, who, on the basis of the scarcity of Persian-era finds in the s, stated that Edom had been completely abandoned from the sixth century BCE onwards. He found no signs of any administrative, cultural or religious continuity after the Neo-Babylonian conquest and believed the fate of the Edomites was reflected in the biblical traditions, which made no explicit mention of Edom in later traditions.

The archaeological record is quite complex. The settlement patterns are diverse and highly flexible, probably reflecting the uncertain conditions stemming from socioeconomic factors. In the Achaemenid and then the Hellenistic period, the use of Imperial Aramaic and the settlement of proto-Arabic groups like the Qedarites and later the Nabateans proceeded rapidly.

The Qedarites were primarily interested in safeguarding the trade routes that ran from the coast through Palestine to the province of Arabia. Substantial studies on the social, economic, and political structures and settlement patterns in Idumea have appeared in recent years. Several questions arise from these materials: What of the Idumeans themselves, living for over two centuries in what had been southern Judah, without any known political, cultural or religious organization? Can we even think of them in terms of ethnicity?

On the one hand, some seem to convey a particular hatred toward Edom e. On the other hand, texts that are positive towards Edom emerge in the Persian period. This volume aims at highlighting and advancing new developments in the study of Edom by bringing together researchers from different disciplines Archaeology; Assyriology; epigraphy, and Hebrew Bible studies.

This article pursues three major objectives: 1 describing the historical Edom in light of the most recent archaeological and historical research; 2 investigating Edom's role within the narrative of the first literary edition of the Jacob Cycle; 3 exploring the role of Edom throughout the various redactional processes of the exilic and Persian periods.
